  • Taupo is on the edge of Lake Taupo. The south end of the lake is New Zealand's largest fresh water delta wetland, home to over 40 bird species.

  • Tongariro National Park is south of Lake Taupo and has three volcanoes: Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The park was created in 1887, making it New Zealand's first national park.

  • The Taupo region has six forest parks. The Pureora Forest Park is home to the rare native kaka, or bush parrot, and fluorescent blue mushroom. The Kaimanawa and Whirinaki Forest Parks are known for their unique concentrations of native forest.
